Unique Features and Animals: The woodland just behind our house is the home of bald eagles, great horned owls, bobcats, deer, gopher tortoises etc. The native landscape in our yard supports the variety of birds, bees and butterflies that live there.

Gopher tortoises occasionally travel under our fence. We have a resident black racer. Cloudless sulphers, gulf fritillaries, zebra longwings, monarchs and red admirals visit regularly. We also see giant swallowtails, eastern tiger swallowtails, and red spotted purples. Bumble bees are regular visitors to the goldenrod and the Tea Bush (grey leaf) always has bees.

Landscape Description: My property is adjacent to a predominately pine woodland and across a trail to another wooded area that can be wet. Prior to the installation of this new landscape, my back yard was a fenced in lawn with an oak tree, palm hibiscus, and privacy hedge on the east side of the property. The native gardens now dominate the landscape and attract a wide variety of butterflies, bees, and birds. The hibiscus is surrounded by grasses, dune sunflower and yellow top. Under the oak is a blanket of twin flower and the west side of the yard is filled with a variety of native grasses shrubs, flowers and small trees. On the south side of the pool deck there is a native flower garden. There is a wide grass path throughout the landscape for my dog to wander.

Challenges: There was some erosion along the east side of our pool deck. We have planted golden rod which is stabilizing the area.
