Started: 2018-2019
Percentage of Native Plants: 67%
Amount of Sun and Shade: Mixed sun/shade
Unique Features and Wildlife:
Almost all of the plants are meant to support butterfly life (the purpose of the landscape company that helped us, Native Butterfly Flowers). Some of the wildlife we see are:
-
- Birds: pairs of painted buntings, brown-headed cowbird, catbird, black-throated blue warbler, red-bellied woodpecker, cardinal, blue jay, mockingbird, mourning dove, ring-necked turtle dove, white-winged dove, grackle, ibis, hawks
- Reptiles: anoles, black snake, garter snake, corn snake, turtles
- Mammals: squirrels, rabbit, possum, raccoon
- Insects: many, but notable are the various butterflies and moths – atala butterflies at times
Landscape Description: We wanted a yard that that coexisted easily with the neighborhood. The front is meant to blend with traditional suburbia utilizing primarily native plants, but the back yard is a postage-stamp size native Florida landscape (with a few exceptions) with short paths and bird feeding stations.
Challenges: Most of the existing plants were removed and native foliage was planted. A number of larger plants, non-native, were retained.
Parking Restrictions: Park in front of the house, either on the edge of the property on the street or on the median (road is divided with a median).
